Description: The flag is made of the textile (wool), with 43 stars. The flag measures 140 by 210 cm. It is the first American flag raised on La Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico. As part of an island group in the Caribbean Sea often referred to as the Spanish Virgin Islands, Vieques lies 8 miles east of the Puerto Rican mainland. It has been regarded as the sister island to Puerto Rico hence, nicknamed Isla Nena. Description: This poster advertises "American Guide Week," taking place November 10th to 16th of an unspecified year. American Guide Week celebrated the efforts of the Federal Writers' Project, a Works Progress Administration agency designed to give work to white-collar workers during the Great Depression under the umbrella of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal. The Federal Writers' Project worked on a variety of publications, but is best known today for the project celebrated by this poster, the American Guide Series. As the poster notes, the American Guide Series aimed to describe America to Americans, state by state. Employees with the Federal Writers' Project worked to create a guidebook for each state, as well as guidebooks for many more defined areas such as cities, highway routes (such as Route One), and specific rural areas (such as Lima and Allen County, Ohio). Description: Three 5" by 7" (12.7 by 17.8 cm) photographs depict some of the celebrations in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Treaty of Greenville, which took place in August 1945. Events included a parade, an appreciation dinner for artist Howard Chandler Christy, and exhibition of the original Treaty of Greenville, on loan from the National Archives. The state of Ohio commissioned Christy (1873-1952), a nationally-known illustrator, to create the work for the 150th anniversary of the treaty that ended the Indian Wars in Ohio. The painting "The Signing of the Treaty of Greene Ville" was unveiled in a ceremony on August 3. Christy (in the white suit) can be seen sitting on the left in the first and second images. Governor Frank Lausche is seated next to him and can be seen addressing the crowd in the third image. Christy, born just south of Zanesville in Duncan Falls, Ohio, went to New York to study art at the age of sixteen. He began working at Scribner's Magazine in 1898 as an illustrator. During the Spanish American War, his illustrations of Cuba and Puerto Rico were seen around the United States. He returned to Duncan Falls after the war and began painting. By the early twentieth century Christy's elegant illustrations of women, collectively called "Christy Girls," appeared in Scribner's, Century, Ladies Home Journal, McClure's, and several books. Christy Girls were also used in recruitment posters during World War I. Christy began painting portraits after World War I; his best-known subjects were Calvin Coolidge, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Amelia Earhart, and Douglas MacArthur. The Depression of the 1930s changed Christy's artistic emphasis to historical subjects. In addition to the Greenville painting, Christy painted the "Scene of the Signing of the Constitution of the United States," which hangs in the Capitol in Washington, DC. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Reverse reads "Cinci., O., Sept. 1937. Old Foraker Home". Joseph B. Foraker's home was located at the southeast corner of Madison Road and Grandin Road in Cincinnati, Ohio. The two story stuccoed home, built in 1860, was behind Holy Angels School and used as the rectory for a church. Joseph B. Foraker, born July 5, 1846, was the 37th Governor of Ohio. His term lasted from January 11, 1886 to January 13, 1890. Foraker served two terms as a republican Senator for Ohio which lasted from 1897 to 1909, during which time he sponsored the Organic Act of 1900, otherwise known as the Foraker Act, which helped establish goverment and citizenship for Puerto Rico. He died in Cincinnati May 10, 1917 and was buried in the Spring Grove Cemetery. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph of Arthur K. Lawrence in Spanish American War uniform with a horse, posing with two other African American members of the Medical Corps in front of a tent. Lawrence served as a hospital steward in the 9th Battalion, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish American War. The battalion was not sent to Cuba to fight, but spent the duration of the war at several camps in the United States. After the war, Lawrence became a doctor and established a medical practice in Columbus, Ohio; his office was located in the Williams Building at 681 East Long Street. Arthur Kelton Lawrence (1877-1954) was the son of Thomas Lawrence and Martha Hartway Lawrence. Martha escaped from slavery and was taken in by the Kelton family in Columbus, who also employed Thomas. The two were married in 1864. The Spanish American War broke out in April 1898 and ended in July of the same year, during the presidency of Ohioan William McKinley. The United States and Spain battled over control of Cuba, urged on by newspapers such as the New York Journal and the New York World. The so-called "yellow press" presented events from a slanted perspective, favoring Cuban independence from Spain and arousing public sentiment in support of American intervention. As a result of the war, the United States gained control not only of Cuba, but also Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. View on Ohio Memory.
